Part of

Brownie Traditions

We did a quiz about the history of Brownies and learned that in

1914, when Brownies was first started they were called Rosebuds

but that it was changed to Brownies in 1916 because the girls

did not like the name Rosebuds.  We also learned about the brown

cotton dress that Brownies used to wear, we’re glad we have a more

colourful uniform now.

Brown Owl brought her camp blanket in so we could see what

Brownie and Guide badges looked like when she was young, and

we tried to match them to our modern day badges by the pictures,

some were quite difficult.

We learned about how the flags of England, Scotland and Ireland combine to make up the

Union Flag (the flag of Wales was not included because Wales was united with England at the time) and that it is only called the Union Jack when flown from the Jackstaff of a Naval ship.

We learned the old Six rhymes and what Brownies used to carry in their pockets (pocket book, pencil, handkerchief, piece of string, safety pin, plaster, and 10p for the phone) and how they were inspected to make sure they were clean, smart and had all the pocket items with them.

It was really amazing how much has changed and how much we enjoyed some of things they used to do, so much so that we re-introduced a bit into our pack!
